In 2017, Plastic Oceans Australasia (POA) was founded with an ambitious and urgent mission: to change the world’s attitude toward plastic within a generation. Today, as we reflect on the incredible journey we’ve undertaken together, we are proud to say that this mission has been accomplished.
Over the past eight years, POA has worked tirelessly to inspire change across communities, schools, businesses, and governments. Through our educational programs, advocacy efforts, and collaborative campaigns, we’ve created a legacy of impact that will endure far beyond the life of our organisation.
Our Achievements
• Education: We’ve empowered over 250,000 students with the knowledge and tools needed to reduce waste and embrace sustainable living. By embedding these values at an early age, we’ve helped foster a generation committed to protecting the planet.
• Business Impact: Our EPIC program enabled 16 workplaces to reduce single-use plastic by 27%, saving an astounding 27 million pieces annually.
• Policy Advocacy: We’ve influenced policy at local, national, and international levels, working to create a circular economy and reduce plastic pollution at its source.
• Community Engagement: Through events, festivals, and campaigns like Picnics Unwrapped and Oceans in Motion, we’ve reached countless individuals, inspiring them to take action in their daily lives.
Wrapping Up
As we celebrate these milestones, we also recognize that the time has come to wind down our operations. This decision comes not from a lack of progress, but rather from the confidence that we’ve achieved what we set out to do. Together, we’ve built a movement that has fundamentally shifted attitudes toward plastic, leaving a legacy of awareness and action that will continue to grow.
The Work Continues
While POA’s chapter is closing, the fight against plastic pollution is far from over. We urge all of you to carry forward the lessons, tools, and inspiration you’ve gained through your involvement with POA.
